Nutritional Advice for Diabetic Patient

FREE FOODS

 

  • Salad and boiled vegetables from the group of vegetables allowed such as:

Tomato, Cucumber, Radish, Green leafy vegetables, Cabbage, Cauli flower, Potol, kakrol, Dharosh, capsicum, gourds, carrot etc.

  • Beverages likes vegetables soups ( clear ) , Lime juice , Dilute  butter milk , Tomato juice , Coconut water.

 

 

FOODS TO BE AVOIDED

                                                        

  • Sugar, Honey, Glucose, Gur, Jam &Jelly.

  • Fats like Vanaspathi, Ghee, butter, coconut oil.

  • Fried food items and food cooked in too much oil like chips, pappad.

  • Bakery products like cakes, pastries, cream biscuits.

  • Sweets like laddu, burfi,  pudding & ice-cream.

  • Refined starch products like cornflower, commercial jelly products custard powder & arraroot powder etc.

  • Roots vegetables like potato, sweet potato, yam, colocasia, topioca.

  • High calorie fruits like banana, mango, grapes, pomegranate, sapota, custard apple, jack fruits, wood apple.

  • Dried fruits like dates & raisins.

  • All sweetened aerated drinks like coke, Pepsi, Urocola, virgin etc.

  • Proprietary drinks like Horlicks, Boost, Bournvita, Complan etc.

  • Fatty meals like ham, red meat, organ meat, shrimp, fish – egg, egg yolk etc.

  • Pickles made in oil & salt.

  • Coconut

 

 

FOOD TO BE TAKEN IN LIMITED QUANTITY

 

  •  Vegetables like carrot, peas, beans etc.

  • Cereals like wheat, rice and their products like refined flour, pulses & grams etc.

  • Oils such as Teer, Rupchada, Beno, Fresh, Sunflower, olive oil etc.

  • Fish and chicken in boiled, steamed, grilled or baked form not more than four times a week. (Allowance 50gm per day).

  • One egg white can be taken everyday.

  • Fruits like orange sweet lime apple ripe papaya guava.( Allowance 100gms  per day).

  • Whole milk intake should not exceed 300ml. Per day including that used for curd, tea, coffee.

 

 

MY RECOMMENDATIONS

 

  • High fiber food items like green leafy vegetables & green salads should be taken in plenty.

  • Whole grams & pulses are preferable to polished ones. They may be included in at least one meal in sprouted or raw form.

  • Whole wheat bread is preferable to refined flour bread.

  • Equal spacing of the three major meals per day is very important. Free food items should be taken in between the major meals and wherever there is feeling of hunger.

  • Omission of any food item from the list given above does not imply that they are freely allowed or prohibited.

  • Take pinch of cinnamon powder in your raw tea or one glass of warm water.
